This primary bath was envisioned as a deeply personal retreat within a comprehensive whole-home renovation—an intimate sanctuary that transports the homeowners beyond the everyday. Although the original footprint was extremely limited, the design strategically expanded into an adjacent linen closet to maximize functionality, while design details were thoughtfully considered to create a space that feels gracious, serene, and luxurious.

The inspiration for the home’s transformation, aptly named “Upstate Italy,” was rooted in the homeowners’ heritage, travels, and desire to capture the relaxed warmth of the Italian countryside blended with the casual elegance of upstate living. The primary bath became a meaningful expression of this vision.

Authentic, earthy materials were selected to establish a timeless sense of place. Terracotta interlocking floor tile grounds the room with warmth and character, while a patterned tile within the shower introduces artistry and a sense of discovery. The shower itself is framed by a custom arched opening, creating an architectural focal point that beautifully showcases the glass enclosure and refined brass detailing.

A warm wood double vanity balances the stone and tile elements, bringing natural texture and handcrafted character to the room. Brass accents throughout—including curved medicine cabinets and elegant shower fixtures—introduce a layer of sophistication reminiscent of a boutique European hotel. Cream-toned countertops, large-format stone wall tile and light plaster-look off-white walls envelop the space with softness and quiet luxury, while maintaining a light, open, and tranquil atmosphere.

The result is a timeless and transportive retreat where thoughtful space planning, architectural detail, and layered materiality transform a modest footprint into an enduring daily escape.
