This pro bono Murray Avenue School design project is now named Curiosity Cove. The goal was to give a glimpse of what we could accomplish when we re-imagined the classroom - turning uninspired, underutilized or outdated spaces into educational, inspired, interactive, collaborative community spaces.
Mobile desks adjust up and down. Adjustable seating can accommodate the very youngest to older students by selecting how many layers of the stools are needed. The stools also have an option to flip one of the layers to reveal a rocking component that can assist concentration in children with ADHD. Mobile book/supply carts allow reference materials to go where students are working & maybe take a trip to the library to fill it up with new material.
Wall washing lighting hidden behind new ceiling molding opens up the windowless space while acoustic lighting pendants have sound absorption characteristics to help to create a productive environment for group work.
The large-scale dry erase white board was incorporated as the 5th grade graduating class gift where we had each class vote on the best inspiration quotes. My favorite amongst the winners: “Why do people say the sky’s the limit when there are footprints on the moon.”
I hope the design has helped pique curiosity & a love of exploration.
